Are you moving soon? Or have you just moved? Then there is probably a large pile of moving boxes waiting to be unpacked. Of course, you want to unpack your things quickly and easily and then give them a place in your new place. Well, with these 17 tips, that job is done in no time!

1. Clean everything thoroughly

A new home is a new start. And why not start with a clean slate? Literally, almost. Make sure you clean everything thoroughly before unpacking your things. We mean drawers, racks, and cabinets, among other things. This way, your things will immediately get a fresh and clean place in your new home.

Do you not feel like cleaning everything from top to bottom first? There is also a solution for that. Most cleaning companies offer a “delivery cleaning.” They ensure that your house or apartment is spic and span before you move in. One less worry!

2.  Moving Boxes to the right room

It is best to place your boxes in the right room to make it easy for yourself and your fellow movers. This way, you can unpack separately per room, and you don’t have to lug everything from hot to her through your house all the time.

3.  Use your garage or storage room as a storage place.

Your garage and storage room are the least important places at the time of your move. It is, therefore, best to set up these spaces last, after everything else has already been done. While unpacking your other rooms, you use your garage or storage room as a storage place for the less relevant items. And, if you don’t have enough room in the rest of your home for the boxes of the rooms, you haven’t gotten to yet.

Please note: store your moving boxes in such a way that your most important items are within reach.

4. Unpack boxes with the most important items first

Do we recommend that you pack a box or suitcase for the first day? Top! Then you also unpack it first in your new home. Of course, we are talking about stuff you need the first evening and the first morning. Think, for example, of a set of clean clothes, toiletries, bed linen, breakfast, cutlery and crockery, and any important documents. Also, separate your chilled packaging box containing food or drinks.

5.  Start assembling and making the beds.

Before you start unpacking all your rooms, putting all the beds together is best. Prepare them in advance. Believe us; you will unpack the rest of your stuff much more relaxed if you know that you can sleep wonderfully in your own bed at night. Also, if unpacking takes longer than planned, you don’t have to assemble your beds in the evening.

6.  Then go to the kitchen.

So, now you can start the rest of the unpacking with peace of mind. We suggest you start in the kitchen. This is the most important place in a house or apartment. And you probably packed the largest number of boxes for this space, with a lot of fragile items such as kitchen appliances and crockery. Once you’ve set this up, the rest of the unpacking is a breeze.

7. Put away empty boxes immediately.

Now that you already have a number of empty moving boxes fold them together and store them neatly. That way, they don’t get in the way, and you get a better overview of the work that still lies ahead. Fewer boxes in the house immediately give you good courage to persevere! Follow this tip after every room you’ve unpacked and decorated, and you’ll find it gets smoother and smoother.

8. Time for the bedrooms

After the kitchen, it’s time for the bedrooms. If you are already planning to spend the night in your new home, it is nice that your bedroom is furnished as well as possible. As we said in tip 5, ensure your bed is assembled. Don’t have time for this during your first unpacking day? Then your mattress and pillow are also enough for the first night(s).

Are you staying in temporary accommodation? Then store your belongings safely in a storage room.

9.  Give each family member a to-do list

Are you moving with several family members? Then give everyone a to-do list. For example, let everyone unpack and decorate their own bedroom. Or leave the kitchen to one family member, the bathroom to another, and so on. That way, you don’t get in each other’s way, and the unpacking goes all the faster.

10. Now it’s time for the bathroom.

After the kitchen and the bedroom(s), it is time to give the things in your bathroom a place. Do you still have time for that on your first moving day? Then do it! Because after such a long and hard day, a nice shower and brushing your teeth can work wonders. Don’t have time for that day? No problem! Then make sure you have all the bathroom essentials ready to freshen up.

11. Take regular breaks

We understand that you want to get rid of that moving hassle as quickly as possible and that you prefer to continue working. But it is certainly not bad to take regular breaks. Eat and drink something to recharge your batteries. Do your friends or family help you during the move? Then it’s nice to stop now and then to have a chat. This way, you make something fun out of it, unpacking is less stressful, and you are a lot more productive!

12. Assemble your furniture

So, you’ve decorated the main rooms. Now it’s time to do the rest of the work. Start assembling your furniture, such as tables, armchairs, and cabinets. Make sure you put them together in the right place. This way, you don’t have to slide or lift afterward.

13. Make it fun

Not everyone likes moving and unpacking equally. Most of us probably dread it. But you can make something fun out of it! For example, put on some music you like. Or invite friends and family with whom you get along. That way, you bring atmosphere to an otherwise dull and boring day.

14. Organize Clothes

Did you put your furniture together? Then you can now hang your clothes in your closets and organize your clothes racks. You don’t want your clothes to stay in those dusty moving boxes for too long. If you’ve packed your clothes properly, they should still look pretty good. You can probably store most of them right away in your shelving and cabinets. This way, you can immediately put on a fresh outfit after your first day of moving.

15. Childcare for young children

Do you have young children who can’t help with the move or unpacking yet? Then give them some distraction to keep themselves occupied while you’re unloading. Or arrange a day of care.

16. Decoration and trinkets last

Last but not least. Decoration and other goodies. You don’t have to give it a place right away. That can wait a while. Take your breath away, get used to your new surroundings, and little by little, decorate your home the way you want. Make sure that these items are not in the way.

17. Explore

You have now finally moved to your new neighborhood. Great, right? So enjoy it! Take a little time each day to explore the area. Are there nice restaurants? Are there nice parks to enjoy the sun for a while? Maybe you can already have a chat with your new neighbors? It’s okay if you don’t unpack everything right away. Take advantage of your new neighborhood too!
