Process and Applications of 8000 Series Flow Meter

Any industry that uses or processes fluids or gas, flow rate measurement and monitoring is very important. Accurate measurement is meant to safeguard workers and consumers’ safety, but it also helps to know whether the company is making any profits or losses. Special tools called flow meters are used to ensure that flow rate measurement is accurate.

Since fluids and gases come in so many kinds with different characteristics, their industrial applications also vary. This also means that the user needs particular flow meters for specific applications. Flow rate is measured in mass or volume where a liquid or gas is passing or stored. It can be a pipe or vessel. The capacity or type of flow meter determines its application. Various types of flow meters are designed with their constraints and requirements. Flow meters are also called flow gauges, flow-switches, flow sensors, or liquid flow monitors. The industry where the flow rate meter is being used will determine its name.

Essentially, flow meters are categorized into 5 different groups. In these five categories, several flow meters fall under them. Today we will explore the 8000 series flow meter from Proteus Industries to see how it works. The article will also give you the main categories I’d flow meters and some of their examples. Read on to get more insights.

The Proteus 8000 Series

8000 Series

The 8000 series flow meters from Proteus falls in the same category as the 6000 series and 7000 series. These types of flow meters are called vortex flow meters. The 8000 series depend on the vortex concept to produce accurate flow rate reading. Not only does it give accurate readings, but it is also cost-effective. Designed and produced by Proteus Industries, the 8000 flow meter series is used to measure liquids that require heat transfers. Inside this type of velocity flow meter are parts used to detect vortices frequency shed by the bluff body inside the flow steam. The high accuracy measurement produced by the 8000 series flow meters is due to the pulse input signal created when measuring flow rate. The signal is directly related to the fluid’s flow rate.

With the 8000 series flow meters, users get reliable, accurate, rugged, and cost-effective flow rate reading in liquids and fluids that transfer heat from -40 to 90 °C. These heat transfer flow meters can be customized to use will fluids of up to 150 °C and above. The 8000 series flow meters have built-in relays to shut down a system or sound an alarm before any equipment or product is destroyed.

Main features of 8000 Series Flow Meters

  • The 8000 velocity flow meters have a wide flow measurement range that ranges between 0.2 to 227 LPM / 0.05 to 60.0 GPM
  • The flow range accuracy range of these flow meters is also high, at about 3% flow range.
  • In standard models, the measured liquid temperature ranges from -40 to 90°C. On the other hand, the customized versions measure liquids of up to 150°C and above.
  • Due to digital signal processing, the 8000 series meters provide more accuracy when measuring heat transfer liquids.
  • The 8000 series flow meter from Proteus has AutoAlarm™. This is an automatic alarm trip point setting feature that shuts down the meter when it malfunctions.
  • 0–5 VDC or 0–10 VDC and 4–20 mA outputs
  • Standard NEMA 4X / IP66 enclosure
  • Users can customize these types of velocity flow meters or OEMs according to their needs.
  • 5-year warranty

Other Categories of Liquid Flow Meters

  • Differential Pressure Flow Meters

In this type of flow meter, the flow rate is determined by Bernoulli’s equation. When fluids flow through the pipe, these flowmeters cause construction inside the pipe. This causes pressure drop inside the meter. The pressure drop will increase as the flow increases. The flow rate is provided by a transmitter that measures the differential pressure from the impulse piping within the flow meter. These flow meters are the most commonly used flowmeters accounting for 21% of the world’s market for flow meters. Differential pressure flow meters are waste, oil, gas, power, mining, and many other industries.

  • Positive Displacement Flow Meters

PD are also called mechanical flow meters. These flow meters measure flow rate in volume by delivering the measured potion and refilling it again. The amount of fluid is then calculated. These are the only kinds of flow meters that directly measure the flow rate of fluids, while other flow meters convert other measured parameters into flow rate.

The fluid volume that goes through the pipe is directly proportional to the flow meter’s output. A system is needed to constantly fill and empty the buckets without leaving the pipe. PDs have high accuracy levels and are preferred in transporting oil or fluids like gasoline, hydraulic fluids, water, and various gas applications.

  • Mass Flow Meters

Mass flow meters are also known as inertial flow meters. They measure the flow rate of fluids that go through tubes. Most mass-related processes use mass flowmeters because they measure force coming from the speeding mass of fluid. The two most commonly used mass flow meters include the thermal dispersion flow meter and the Coriolis mass meter. Coriolis flowmeters have high accuracy regardless of which liquid is being measured. Mass flow meters are commonly used in industries such as pharmaceuticals, wastewater, mining, and power.

Conclusion

Finding the right kind of flow meter depends on the application at hand. The 8000 series flow meters have high accuracy levels when measuring heat transfer liquids of about 40 to 90°C. The customizable version can measure liquids with temperatures of above 150°C. Before buying any flow meter, contact the manufacturer first to ask whether it’s suitable for your application.
