which we know keeps us awake, can put a very quick boost. Its proven to boost physical abilities.

Its stimulating effect

The caffeine in coffee acts as a stimulant that blocks the function of an inhibitory neurotransmitter called adenosine.
According to one study , this action  increases brain activity  and releases other neurotransmitters to  reduce fatigue.
But the effect of coffee does not stop there since it could lead to a short-term increase in brain function as well as mood and alertness,
according to this  study.

Stimulating caffeine

This molecule, also found in tea, stimulates the brain and helps maintain a state of wakefulness in several ways

● It increases the activity of neurons by acting as an antagonist at their adenosine receptors, thus preventing
the latter from playing its role in drowsiness and sleep.

● It stimulates the pituitary which in turn orders the adrenal glands to produce more adrenaline. Attention, vigilance
and blood pressure increase and fatigue decreases. However, this secretion of adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol
within 2 hours mimics the effects of a stressful event and it is therefore not recommended for stressed and anxious people to exceed 2 cups per day.

● It increases the synthesis of dopamine and, even if it creates a certain dependency, it also allows a reduction
in depression in women over 60, as shown by a study carried out at the Harvard School of Public Health and
carried out in 2011 on more than 50,000 women 2.

It would consolidate long-term memory

This is revealed by a recent study 3 published in the journal Nature Neuroscience, conducted by researchers
at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
They thus studied the role of caffeine on the memory of 160 patients by asking them to examine a hundred photos
of various objects (saxophones, four-leaf clovers, seahorses, etc.) and immediately taking either a pill providing 200mg of caffeine
(about 1 to 2 cups of coffee) or a placebo pill. The following day the participants looked at another series of images similar but not
necessarily identical to the previous ones. The researchers asked them if the image was new, almost similar or the same.

The results of this study showed that those who took 200 mg of caffeine immediately after the image series were better
able to determine the next day whether they had seen the images the day before. Previous studies had failed this type of test
probably because the caffeine was given before the learning tests. Thus, caffeine consumed immediately after this

type of test, can better consolidate visual memory by influencing the levels of certain chemical messengers in the brain
and the behavior of neurons in the hippocampus, a region of the brain important for memory. A French study had already
highlighted in 2010 that the daily consumption of 3 cups of coffee made it possible, in women, to limit age-related cognitive decline.
And moreover in mice, caffeine reduces beta-amyloid plaques, specific to Alzheimer’s disease.

What about type II diabetics?

All the studies tend to show that regular coffee consumption would be rather protective by improving insulin sensitivity.
However, the effects would be really convincing from 3 to 5 cups a day and always without added sugar! 5

Is coffee acidifying?

Not all currents of thought agree on this point and when some say that coffee acidifies the body, science does not confirm
it since its Pral index is slightly negative (-0.96). It would therefore be, chemically speaking, neutral for the acid-base balance but indeed due to the presence of caffeine, it would stimulate the secretion of gastric acid.

And with milk, is it carcinogenic?

Here again, scientific evidence is dramatically lacking and even if it is admitted that interactions can occur between milk proteins and the chlorogenic acid of coffee, for example 6, no scientific study has, to date, proven that coffee milk was carcinogenic!

Limit coffee to have babies…

Not only is the consumption of caffeine discouraged for pregnant women but also for those who wish to have children. According to a British study, fertility would decrease at more than 6 cups a day and although the researchers cannot explain these results yet, they believe that high doses of caffeine increase the risk of miscarriage. Thus, advise women of childbearing age to have a maximum of 2 cups per day (250 mg of caffeine)4.
